Online Strategy

So what do I mean by online strategy anyway?

It wasn’t that long ago, that nobody had an online strategy.

Actually very few companies could claim to have a cogent online strategy even today.

At webtactics, we define online strategy, as the electronic roadmap a company employs to get where it wants to be.

Ok, a bit more detail might be helpful.

Well, let’s go back a few years first.

If you had of asked me, just what five years ago, what was the backbone to a marketing strategy, I would have answered, public relations (PR).

I still think the PR is the core of marketing activities; however what we call public relations has also evolved.

Previously, PR was all about faxing releases to the media and taking people to lunch. Sometimes I miss those days…

Try that today, and see what happens. Try and talk to a journalist after faxing them something.

Faxes, turned into emails, which have evolved into RSS feeds.

PR has moved from press releases, newspaper articles and radio interviews into organic search, blogging, e-newsletters, online magazines and podcasting.

Are you using these Web 2.0 tools to attract and keep customers?

PR is all about reaching beyond traditional marketing and advertising avenues to create a human face for a brand.

Just as PR has evolved, we have moved beyond traditional media to the Web 2.0 world.

This is a world where clients spend more time and gather more influence from online activities than they do from traditional media. That is a huge change for society and the way companies reach and talk to their customers. Online is where it is at.

So, companies need a plan, an online strategy, to make the most of their marketing and communication activities.

Are you using these Web 2.0, or even Marketing 2.0 if you like, elements? You should be.
